HUNGARIAN ARTISTS SUES EMI FOR RACISM

Hungarian Roma (Gypsy) pop band Fekete Vonat (Black Train) has sued EMI Hungary on grounds of racism (news from Budapest Sun, April 12 ed., Vol IX, Issue 15, by Janos Rado). In an untimely gesture, amidst growing global attention to the cause of Roma awareness, EMI Hungary reps have allegedly asked loval stars "Fekete Vonat" not to record their third album in their native Romani language. FK has threatened to break their record contract, as EMI threatens police action. The conflict has draw the attention of parent company EMI London, who respond categorically "it is not good business to be racists."

CZECH PRESIDENT, VACLAV HAVEL HONORS MILAN HLAVSA (PLASTIC PEOPLE) in Czech Rock & Roll Hall of Fame....

Czech Music Awards (Grammys) this year turned up some rather interesting results. Winners included Monkey Business (CZ/US, for best band), Lenka Dusilova (for best female singer), and Don Barta (for best male singer and album.) President Vaclav Havel appeared to present an award to the family of Plastic People founder Milan Hlavsa, who was nominated to the Czech Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. This comes after an historic concert on what would have been the 50th birthday of the late Milan Hlavsa: at Palac Akropolis, the surviving Plastic People along with DG307, Garaz, and the Velvet Revival Band, played two sold out nights. All proceeds went to Hlavsa's widow and the concert recordings will be released on Globus Music.
