FIELD REPORT:

From Sabot to Sunshine: the blistering sounds of Tabor

Prague's alternative Zluta Ponorka (Yellow Submarine) Festival this week featured a performance of legendary Czech bard VLADIMIR MERTA with three young bands from Czech town Tabor: SABOT, WAAWE, and DEVEROVA CHYBA delivered riveting performances, impressing the heck out of everyone. Tabor, not two hours from Prague, is a 15th century castle town with an industrious independent musical community. Perhaps the most known Tabor group is SUNSHINE, whose addictive blend of punk and neo-new wave has earned them not only a track in the Blair Witch Project II film, but also has brought them to Big Wheel Records and big tours across the USA and in Europe. Discerning local DIY label "Free Dimensions Tabor" releases the music of excellent local noisemakers such as WAAWE and DEVEROVA CHYBA, who combine elements of post rock, punk, prog-rock, noise, and melody. A binding force in the Tabor community is CESTA (in Czech, "path") an acronym for Cultural Exchange Center Tabor, a forum for local and international exchange of ideas and information. CESTA founders are Hilary Binder and Chris Rankin, who are the band SABOT, an intense bass and drums duo who have toured extensively throughout the world over. Discussing the thriving local scene of this tiny town, Hilary explains that she really admires the Tabor community, and is inspired by how locals "deeply understand what it means to 'do it yourself' and to get out and learn, seeking that which is beyond and new. They come from an unsupportive environment, and they aren't frightened. They are really the example of taking advantage of what was forbidden before, like contacts to the 'outside.' Now that things are 'open,' rather than suck up what's commercial on the radio they seek something much more and they go out there and find what it is that they really like." Maybe that's exactly what is expressed in Tabor's biting tones. Hear them for yourself...www.tamizdat.org/rpm
