Previews: Tamizdat concerts in USA cancelled, rescheduled...
[24-10-2001]
With the gravity of the events played out on September 11th, understandably news about cultural happenings shortly after that date got short shrift. Tamizdat's tours planned for the month of September were cancelled all at once, when all artists involved were not able to reach the USA on that very day.
On the ominous morning of September 11, bands and artists including DJ Vadim, and Polish bands Robotobibok, Happy Pills, Program, and Something Like Elvis, were to fly from Europe to the New York. The Polish bands were halfway across the Atlantic headed to NY, when their plane turned around and headed back to Frankfurt. DJ Vadim, whose East Coast and Canada minitour was to take place the second week of September, was not able to even leave Heathrow. The CMJ Music Festival was postponed one month.
The Polish bands Robotobibok, Happy Pills, Program, and Something Like Elvis were to be joined by NY's superstars Gogol Bordello for a highly anticipated Tamizdat CMJ Showcase of New Music from Central and Eastern Europe. The showcase was set to take place during the CMJ Festival at the new Club Warsaw (in the Polish National Home) in Greenpoint. Warsaw owner Steve Weitzman (Tramps, Village Underground) and booker Jon Weiss viewed the event as a wonderful way to introduce the excellent new club both to CMJ audiences and music industry nationwide, while bridging exciting new ties with the local Greenpoint Polish community. The bands were then heading to Philadelphia, Boston, Washington DC, and New Jersey.
DJ Vadim and The Russian Percussion were scheduled to play at the Knitting Factory in New York, and then would continue to Washington DC, Philadelphia, Toronto, Montreal, and to colleges on the East Coast. Vadim's Russian Percussion has toured in Europe and Asia extensively but has yet to hit the USA.
DJ Vadim and The Russian Percussion will reschedule for a longer USA and Canada tour in early 2002. Dates for rescheduled Polish bands touring the USA are pending.
