Austrians look East for new sounds... upcoming Eastern European Concerts!
[24-10-2001]
Increasingly in the last years, Austrian ears have been (re)awakening to sounds from Eastern Europe to depths that their EU peers have not yet explored. From Vienna to Salzburg, Viennese tastemakers and music fans of many genres enjoy an increasing amount of Eastern European electronic music, world music, rock, jazz, and everything in between. Doubtful that the reasons for this phenomenon are so simple, but arguably the countries share historical Hapsburg overlap, and in this time of recession, why not take the opportunity to indulge in excellent regional talent? Whatever the case may be, here are some excellent upcoming events in Austria celebrating Eastern European music. First, the Unlimited XV Festival in Wels presents the newest in edgy noise from Eastern Europe and around the world. Then, the Balkan Festival in Salzburg features the finest Balkan jazz and global sounds. Lastly, a concert at Arena in Vienna features Slovenian rockers, Elvis Jackson. New release of Austria's Sabotage Communications label (www.sabotage.at) "PutINout-Finest Tunes from Saint Petersburg" with works by PCP, DJ Demidov, DJ Chack, DA 108, and DJ Zorkin. For a bit of extra reading about this compilation and other events on the axis between Eastern Europe and Austria, we recommend SKUG Magazine, (www.skug.at) Austria's foremost independent music magazine with excellent content and graphics as well as a healthy predilection for Eastern music.
