PREVIEW: Ring Ring Festival, Belgrade, Yugoslavia
May 10 - 16 2001, www.cyberrex.org
[05-05-2001]  |  Heather

The Ring Ring festival in Belgrade boasts the discerning musical predilections of a place normally associated with bombs and not basses. Defying financial, circumstantial, political and all kinds of other odds to bring outstanding music to the halls of Belgrade is obviously an incredible undertaking in a land so torn by strife piggybacked by financial hardship, social upset, and of course unfriendly Nato bombings. The festival's artistic director Bojan Djordjevic has worked for years with notorious pirate/post-pirate radio network Free B-92, and is a walking resourcebook on world and Balkan music, and also has his fingers in many pies concerning distribution, publishing CDs and music, and above all booking and concert promotions. This year, Ring Ring hosts international talent including Peter Brotzmann (DE), Iva Bittova (CZ), Taraf de Haidouks (RU) as well as local wizards Blank Disc and Ognjen i Prijatelji. See the festival's homepage for more information and line-ups from previous Ring Ring festivals, and stay tuned to Tamizdat for a heart-warming Ring Ring festival review coming soon to Tamizdat!
