SUNSHINE (CZ): SPRING TOUR, LIVING IN LA, & MORE
an interview with Kay Burianek, Sunshine's guitarist and singer.

Czech noiserock band Sunshine are about to head out on another massive European and USA tour, with over 60 shows planned from Slovenia to LA. Supporting last year's release of album Necromance (Day After Records, CZ) Sunshine will join the likes of ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead (US), Dead and Gone (US), Jetplane Landing (US), At The Drive In (US), Anyway (CZ), and Starzy Singers (PL). - Where are you living now, I heard you're in California? What are you doing there and are you staying there or???
KAY : Yeah, I move to Los Angeles. I am live in East Hollywood. Spending most of the time searching for celebrities, really appreciate the weather…Even though I'm technically living in the US I am still constantly going back and forth to CZ.
- What's going on these days with Sunshine- are the others in the US as well, and what other bands are you currently playing around with?
KAY: We working on our secret project under cover name 'join the sunshine army now'. Even sounds kind of weird it's just fan club type of things, you know what I mean. At this particular time I am try to find cheap place in China where we'll order sew the uniforms for members they already signed on. Just kidding…Daniel and Martin are over Czech, I am going over there next Sunday, our practice schedule looks so tough and our European tour start April 10th and ending June 16th. It's over 68 shows long tour and seems like no days off at all. I am not playing with any another bands in USA and trust me, otherwise, I will keep secret…
- What's going on with new recordings or songs, anything on the horizon since Necromance?
KAY: We always going backwards, so…we already have some new songs and we suppose to work on before the tour. Seems like we wanna record some stuff right after tour, sort of demo type recording, nothing really serious at this point but I have to come back to USA with preview material for sure.
- What kind of feedback did you guys get from having a song in the Blair Witch 2 film? Will you guys have any other music in films coming up?
KAY: Do you know about some movie we could make it better putting our song in? Just let me know…All the Blair Witch 2 things are just financial nightmare and such a lame feedback because we still have not get any publishing money and it's just messy situation we try goes thru so hard and seems like finally we could. Beside that I guess some people realized that Sunshine's song is there which I can consider like success, isn't that nice?
- What do you think about all of the shit going on in the States right now? I mean, the shit with George Bush and Enron, and the fucking nuts "war on terrorism" propaganda... What do you think about that stuff and about the current atmosphere in the US?
KAY : I don't want to be rude but I will keep my personal opinion for myself. First of all – I have really bad experience with expressing of myself on public. It's been full of misunderstandings and my jokes are sometime too tough and when I am emotional it's like I am sarcastic, so…secondly – I think shit going on everywhere all around the world and it's always easy to put finger on and judge. It's the easiest thing ever and people are generally hypocritical and full of shit. Don't buy it. Personally I don't give a fuck about politic – it's one of the mystery I don't want to discover for myself. Finally – I am white, I have strong antipathy to religion generally, I don't get it matter of 'holy war' and I totally disagree with terrorism. Logically, everyone who after words try to cover it as usual all the propaganda and missing facts what's happened on beginning it's just dumb, deaf and blind.
- How do you guys manage on such long tours together? Who drives and who does the booking?
KAY: Don't ask me…I don't know. I guess we made our own 'package of reasons' we want to do it and just follow it. I don't think we're only one band in Universe doing long tour, anyway…I don't even consider this type of tour like long tour. We always have driver and booking for this tour does Green Hell from Germany and in UK the Agency Group. For upcoming USA tour I am honored and pleasured to say we'll be probably under care of the Agency Group too.
- Anything else really cool recently come up with you guys that you'd want to tell about?
KAY: It's obviously compare what you consider like 'really cool'. I would say that we just work now on things they smell more like business part than artistic aspects but it's really necessary to me. We are going to tour like 4 piece, which is totally new thing. We will probably open in UK for And You Will Know Us By the Trail Of Dead which is big thing for us. Before tour Day After will release our 12" Hysterical Stereo Loops, Beats and Bloody Lips on cd with unreleased bonus, we'll play couple of shows in Czech and Slovakia. Let see…even I am not in Czech things still work it out well and seems like 2002 would be hectic year speaking of shows and tours and I am so excited about it!
