Interview with Brano, from Subtech Productions

10.02.2001

Back in the "old" days (er...well, before 97 at least), you could always duck your head under the castle in Bratislava, Slovakia, for some experimental or heavy rock concerts in the U Club's subterranean cannon of a venue. A former wine cellar to the old Austro-Hungarian castle grounds, the U Club premises promised a caterwaulish ear dervish of sound and smog: you can imagine the acoustics of a long untempered-for-soundwaves wine cellar with no windows at all and beer flowing along with the bleary lights. My personal favorite memories of U Club involve trying out my ears on different points in the room during a concert. If you could get to a midpoint about 2/3 of a way back from the stage, you had a delightful earful. If you managed to get stuck with hung-over friends in the back of the hall near the bar, you held your head, for the 747 roar of pure cement hollow ensured a torturous experience. Never mind the fond memories, know what's going on there now? Well, someone bought the whole U Club space, and put a shooting range behind the long hall where the venue was. And the venue booking was taken over by savvy kids in Subtech. We met with Brano from SubTech at a concert with Surgeon in Radost FX in Prague. A few words right here:

T: About Subtech Productions, when did you start, and what are your main activities? What is the relationship between your releases and the booking company???
B: Subtech does u.club programm since april 1998, before we tokk care of fridays (since Sept. 1994. our resident djs dalo (olga+jozef., numb, pvc) and toky (numb) except djing produce tracks, too. Tibor usually takes care of design works/artworks.

T: What is the relationship between Subtech and U Club in Blava? What are some shows that you are working on for the next months at U Club?
B: No special events are planned. Less names more local djs which are usually good (sk, cz,...) + friends. booking for booomerang too.

T: What releases has Subtech released? (any others besides the ones listed on your website?) Who are your main artists, and do you manage as well as book?
B: No releases were released under Subtech. We dont concentrate on booking so much. we import for u.club and booomerang events and cooperate with most Slovak djs (techno mainly).

T: Where do you sell most of your vinyl?
B: Its distributed from UK (Intergrale)- we dont know where it is selling best. But Slovakia and Czech rep is okay.

T: What would you say is particular about the techno scene in Bratislava/Kosice? What could you tell us about techno music in general in Slovakia, is it a big scene? Is it still growing? Besides U Club, where in other cities could people go for good music?
B: I think Slovakia has a good techno scene, cca 20-25 quite good young techno djs, fine clubs are in Nitra, Sala, ...Zilina..one off events in cities like Poprad, Puchov, Bardejov, Zvolen...almost no techno in Kosice.

T: Where do your artists mainly tour? Any interesting tours in the last year?
B: No big tours prefered. our residents played a short tours in Canada and France. One off events in Stuttgart, Copenhagen, Lausanne, Barcelona, Moscow, Vienna, Budapest, many places in CZ.

T: What are Subtech's plans for this year and next???
B: U.Club is priority. Except that everybody has its own activities. we will see.  top of page!
