INTERVIEW with David Urban of D.Smack.U
20.12.2000

Anyone in Prague would quickly tell you that one of the finest electronic music promoters in town is David Urban, of D.Smack.U Productions. Working with Prague's Roxy club, D.Smack.U puts on events on weekends and most nights of the week, surrounding and arguably out-popping other rock or theatrical perfs. The first time we met David Urban of D.Smack.U productions, we were freakishly intimidated: a looming 6-feet-dunno-what tall, immer-chapeau'd and always found sporting tee's one would find only by looking real hard along Lafayette St, David is a unmistakable guy. Guant, taciturn and to-the-point, he really has no time for bullshit. We sat for a swift, workmanlike coffee break, and asked David a few pointers about what was going on in town in terms of good electronic grooves. We obviously hadn't done our homework well, as we quickly recognized that we had no clue about the amount of stuff going on in town. He mentioned DJs Katja, Babe LN, Liquid A, and the venues Roxy and also 007, then left us to figure out the rest on our own. We grabbed him again for this quick interview, and we thank him for taking the time to shoot us this:

T: When did you start D.Smack.U, and how did it get started?
DU: 1994. I have started basically one year before to organise concerts here in Prague. I was working like a dj in several clubs and have tried to create some dance events. Talking to big agencies about this so they should get interested with no luck so I dit it myself. D Smack U was my old DJ name which means D taste you or eventuall y if the mood is not as sexually orientated D would hit you

T: What is the focus of your concerts, which kinds of music/bands do you work with most?
DU: Dance and good from trip-hop downtempo to ultimate techno

T: What can you say is most inspiring about bringing foreign DJs and artists to Prague?
DU: To have fun, to see something different, my bank account of course as well!

T: What is most difficult about bringing foreign DJs and artists to Prague?
DU: To deal with some agents , finances

T: What can you say in general about electronic music scenes here in Czech: what is most characteristic of what the artists here are doing, in your opinion?
DU: I am happy that there is scene at least after 7-8 years I am in bussines - basically this is the most important element for me that there is good stuff here . I am sort of nationalistic in good way. It is good to be proud of something nice and I am think I am part of it

T: What are the plans of D.Smack.U for this year?
DU: lot of good music.  top of page!
