Reviews: Keeping the music alive: The live music scene in Slovakia
[19-03-2002] -
By Mirna SoliË, as published in
the Slovak Spectator
The club scene is fragmented and beset by financial difficulties, bureaucracy and laws that many owners consider obstacles to the development of live music ... "Young people in Slovakia don't get a chance to hear alternative types of music. Media, radio stations especially, broadcast music for commercial purposes," he says. "It would be better if they gave more space to something alternative. In the past people appreciated lots of different kinds of cultural activities, probably because they had no chance to experience something different under the regime, so more people attended concerts than today. Now all you get are bars drawing people by advertising tequila for Sk20."...
Iva Bittova & Cikori
In her first ensemble recording since the 1997 classic Bile Inferno, Bittova's new release is broad-ranging tour de force of jazz, world music, and Bittova's hallmark forays into experimental vocal play. The disc makes bold excursions into jazz, led by Vladimir Vaclavek's exquisite guitar supplimented by the deft trumpet playing of Franttisek Kucera and Jaromir Honzaks supple contrabass.
Mihaly Vig
Filmzenek-Tarr Bela (The Film music of Bela Tarr)
Currently the new Bela Tarr film "Werckmeister Harmonies" opens in the USA and Europe. This compilation presents the music of Mihaly Vig, famed guitarist and songwriter in the group Balaton, who has worked with renowned Hungarian film director Bela Tarr for over 20 years. Stunning moods, distinctly Eastern melodies suspended in the whirling cadences of the piano, the intensity of TarrOs films is captured in every every musical moment.
Fotomoto
Never underestimate the Ukrainians. As campy as late Stereolab, and as hooky as Dallas, Fotomoto's self-released debut sounds like West Coast indie-pop, interlaced with a distinctly Eastern European melodic sense. This is one of the sensational surprises that makes our jobs here at Tamizdat worth having!
